Dr. Rigoberta Menchu Tum was born into a poor indigenous family in Guatemala and spent all of her childhood helping her parents out in the field to make a living. Seeing her family sequestered and killed by the Guatemalan government at an early age spurred her interest in activism. She became a skilled organizer, an eloquent speaker, and a passionate artist both in and out of Guatemala. She was the youngest person awarded a Noble Peace Prize.
